My cat is killing my house plants, how do I get her to stop? Also, when she purrs loudly is she unhappy ?

I'm a first time cat owner. Chole is 3 years old I adopted her form the

Humane Society. I've had her since January. She's up- to- date on her shots. I just want to make sure she's happy and I doing everything right for her. I appreciate any advice I get. Ike

My cat is killing my house plants, how do I get her to stop? Also, when she purrs loudly is she unhappy ?
You can find "Cat Off" sprays for plants at WalMart, Lowes, Home Depot, etc. Or try a little cayenne pepper around the base of your plant. Is she using the plants for a little box and tearing them up? Make sure to continual show her the right litter box and keep it CLEAN. She will not use a dirty box.

My cat used to purr when she was scared. Cats purr with an intense emotion. The best thing to do is observe her other actions (tail twitching, eyes big, ears pulled back, etc) to see what emotional state she's in.
Reply:Hi there, firstly the purring is a sign of a very contented and happy cat!

I too had the problem of the houseplant destruction crew with my two cats that I got from the RSPCA. I found the only nice way of teaching them is a simple squirt bottle. It has a spray of about 8-10 feet (cuz the little buggars know when they're in the wrong and run!) After a few squirts, they all hate being a bit wet and eventually they get the message. Just be consistent. If they dig, decorate the top of the soil with cobblestones. Looks nice and they can't move them!

My husband also has this deep growl. Its not a scary growl but its the deep base that comes through and they can't discern where its coming from. It doesn't work when I do it...they just look at me like what ARE you doing lady?? But it works when he does it! They don't like it so we use it as a last resort.

Best of luck with the fur monsters!
Reply:spray her with a spray bottle wen you see her eating the plants, alot of the time they will eat live plants to help with hairballs so maybe get her some petgrass or put her on a good hairball formula cat food
Reply:spray her with a spray bottle and the purring could mean alot of things!
Reply:What is she doing to kill them? Is she eating them or using their soil for a toilet? If you can keep her from eating them, lots of plants are poisonous for cats. If she's using them for a toilet, try to move them to where she can't reach them or else make them so thick that she can't get to the soil.

It depends on the situation as to why a cat will purr. The longer you know her the better you'll be able to tell whether or not shes: 1) Hurt and purring because of the pain; 2) Happy and purring to show her contentment; or 3) Scared and purring to show her fear.

Just like people, it takes time to get to know your pet.
Reply:You could get a spray bottle and fill it with water to keep her away from the plants or you can put mothballs in the plants. Also when she purrs loudly it means she is happy and wants attention. It sounds like youre doing a great job though!
Reply:I have 3 cats. Kiki likes to use the plant pots as a toilet. Freddie will eat any flowers that he can get ahold of. And they all like to chew on anything green.

I've had to put all my plants on high shelves or hang them from the ceiling.

As for spraying her with water, then I tried that with my cats, all it taught them was to not do that when I was in the room.
Reply:you can buy BITTER APPLE spray to spray on your plants to keep her from chewing them.

put plants out of her way.. or buy her "cat grass" so she has a plant she is allowed to chew on, sometimes they chew because they have tummy upset (particularly if on cheap, grocery store or wal mart type food) it induces vomiting

Cats purr when happy and when upset, it isnt unusual for a dying cat to purr

good for you for considering adopting an adult kitty
Reply:if she purrs loudly she wants attention.

With the house plants put them on a high shelf and make sure there is no way the cat can climb up if she does put her in a cage.It may seem cruel but it will work.
Reply:You could get her a plant of her own, like a catnip plant or grass. They sell them at stores like Petsmart. Also, loud purring doesn't mean they are unhappy.
Reply:Is she eating the houseplants, or peeing on them??? If she eats them, move them to where she cant get them; many house plants are poisonous to cats. Likewise if she wees on them!! When she purrs, it means she is very relaxed and extremely happy....it sounds like you are doing everything right and have one very happy cat. Bless you for adopting her and giving her a chance of a good life.
Reply:your house plants could end up killing your cat. check the net to see which plants are poisonous to cats. try getting a decorative planter pot that you can have inside your place and plant some oat grass. it grows very quickly and she will love chewing on this. you can buy the already grwon small tub of it, but it costs $5 and doesn't last long. if you grown your own it will last longer and cost less. then chole can have her own plant. cats like to eat greens as it aides in their digestion and provides nutrients. even if you have her on a balanced diet the grass is a nice treat for her and wont poison her. get her also alot of toys that contain cat nip to keep her entertained.
Reply:Placing moth balls around the plant in the pot is the only real deterrent. Some house plants are poisonous to animals and can kill them, so research your plants on the net to find out if they are the ones.
Reply:My cats like chewing and sucking on my mums house plants leaves. it's a weird habit but she just claps her hands and tells them to stop, both of the cats understand tone of voice and they understand what 'no' means - maybe just a bit of discipline. letting your cat know who's boss is important because as lovely as they are, the little what names will take over if you don't!!!
Reply:PURRING IS PURING.YOU HAVE A HAPPY KITTY.Some tips, fresh air, cat nip, their own bed, clean litter box,.If not using the litter box any any point, the cat is trying to tell you something is wrong, call your vet. enjoy your kitty, i sure do!
Reply:i dont no how to stop her from killing the plants but if she is purring then she is happy
Reply:My cat ate all of my house plants too. Cats need to eat live plants to help with digestion. I've done two things that have helped:

1. Buy "pet grass." It's wheat grass that you can get at any pet store. Aids in digestion and tastes great to cats.

2. Buy a harness and leash and take the cat outside regularly. I take my cat out on little adventures and he loves to chew on the outdoor plants and grass. Make sure no one has sprayed pesticides lately.
Reply:The louder the purr, the happier the kitty! No worries there!

Cats eat grass outside when there tummy is upset so they can barf. No joke! Its like Pepto to them. It could also be that your plants just taste good to her. Check your local pet store for some cat grass, which comes in a little tray you just add water to and it grows in days. Next, find a better place for your plants, either from a hanger or some place your little girlie can't get to. Not unlike a child, kitties don't know whats bad for them and some house plants kill. Take away her bad habit and see if she will settle for the better option.
