I have 2 tropical plants in my house, a dwarf banana & orange.?

I live in PA so i brought them in for winter. They both keep getting a grayish fuzzy type mold "i think" on them. It is only once an a while. It doesn't seem to bother anything so i just lightly scrape it off. They are both heavy feeders so i feed them with blood meal. Does anyone have the same problem or a reason? The banana also seems to get knats around it.

sounds as if you have a scale infection...check out the stems and underleaves to see if there are roundish 'growths' all over the place...if so, these are insects sucking your plants sap. The waste from these insects is fuzzy white. Treat with malthione, OR mildly soapy water to drown them. These pests can seriously weaken a plant quickly.

For fruit flys, you have the choice of building a trap with a chunk of banana in the bottom of a jar covered with Saran wrap, punch small holes in the Saran wrap..they will get in , but can't get out...but in my experience, a trap like this attracts more bugs than it catches...so .... good luck
Reply:Try using a mix of Ivory dish detergent and water. Spray on the leaves of your plant to get rid of the scale. You can purchase gnat traps at your local home and garden store. They are 3x5 and yellow. The color will attract the gnats and they stick to the card. Then replace when necessary.
