Cats do not like the smell of citrus peelings. Lay some orange rinds or you can buy citrus spray at the pet store.

No it shouldnt hurt the plants. You could also try putting red pepper in the pot. Cats learn quickly if they get something spicy on their paws as they lick themselves to clean and they wont like the burning sensation.
Reply:I've heard that cinnamon is a real turnoff to cats. It shouldn't hurt your plants either. Perhaps trying a mixture of the citrus that someone else mentioned with the cinnamon as a top layer in the pots...Hmmmm....

Reply:I'm not sure if it will but I used a different trick. Go to the hardware store %26amp; buy a roll of screen (should cost about 7 or 8 bucks). Cut out circles as big as your pots. Cut a hole in the center as small as you can %26amp; still let the plants have room. You reall only want to cover up the dirt on the sides of the plant. Cut a slit so you can slip it around the base of the plant. Your plants can still get water through the screen. If your kitty is persistant he will be able to pull off the screen but my cats never tried to. As soon as they realized they couldn't dig easily they gave up.
Reply:You might try what I did. Grind up an orange peel and mix it with coffee grounds. Put some in the pot and maybe spread some around it. This kept a neighbor cat away for about two weeks. Next time I make some up, I will put some in the freezer, and put fresh out once in a while.
Reply:You can use large river rock or pieces of slate around the base of the plant or 1/4" square chicken wire that you have to cut to the shape of the pot. Cheyenne Pepper works well but they can track the red stuff onto your carpet. Moth balls smell so I never used them.
Reply:putting pebbles or small gravel available at any any garden store on the dirt in the plants keeps your cat from digging them up

they are also good to put under the soil in the pots to keep the roots from standing in water
Reply:I have 9 cats. I keep them from digging in my houseplants (and my flowerbeds) by sprinkling cayenne pepper (crushed red pepper) on the mulch and in the dirt.



The pepper does not harm the cats; they sneeze a bit and then avoid the plant. The pepper does not harm the plants, even if it washes into the soil or gets on the plant.
Reply:I had the same problem with our two cats until I covered the dirt with pinecones. They look nice, smell good, are lighter than rocks, are free to scavenge and the cats will not set foot (paw) on them. Depending on the size of the pot you can pick up large ones or little ones.

Reply:I had the same problem with my cats. Instead of using mothballs... ( i didn't want to smell them) I covered the top of the dirt with a layer of river rocks. They are pretty and the cats leave it alone now. :) Good luck.
