I have insects in the soil of my house plants & I don't know what they are.?

I noticed when I water my house plants (which I've gown from seed) there are tiny little white/ clear insects in the soil. They are literally the size of a pin head (1mm - 2mm in length)- very small but so easy to see as they move about so much. Although they are small, the bodies on them are long. They are only visiable during watering and disappear again. I can see lots of tiny little legs on each insect - they have no other colour to them apart from being fully white or clear. There are tons of them in each pot - I'm sure the numbers are increasing. I have trawled the net and I can't seeem to find a definative answer as to what they could be.

Does anyone know what they are? Can they escape from the pot and end up crawling around my house? Do they mature into anything else or do they remain the same? I really don't want to throw my plants out - does anyone know how I can kill the little buggers? They make me itch just thinking about them!

Many thanks

They are called fungus gnats. Usually they show up because the plants have been over watered and the roots are beginning to rot. You can actually water the plants with rubbing alcohol as a quick kill method (will not hurt the plant) then set the plants in the sink or remove the drain tray to dry the soil as much as possible. Remove as much of the old soil as you can then re-pot the plant in fresh soil. Add something with the soil like small rocks or horticultural charcoal to help it drain better and not attract the gnats. Don't water the plants until the soil is fairly dry and after a couple hours empty the drain trays because the plant has absorbed all it needs by then.
Reply:they sound orrrible sugest you dont eat them or play with them
Reply:Unless you want these bugs in the house put the plants outside and leave them. Use artificial plants in the house.
