Can I put my house plants outside in full sun in the summer? I live in Upstate NY?

please specify what kind of plants

succulents (cactus) have no problems being outside from spring to fall..most ferns will do fine..christmas cactus will do fine also..

it just depends on the type of plant..african violets should never be put out or rabbits paw fern either or peace lilies

i have spider plants, several cactus and a few asparagus ferns that i put on my front deck from middle of april until almost november..they are protected from frost in april and october sitting there and in the afternoons get full sun..deck is facing the west...i water the cactus 2-3 times a month and the other plants as needed

by the time november rolls around the christmas cactus are loaded with blooms

i have 5-6 plants that i cant put out because the sun/heat/humidity will kill them

if you dont know what kind of plants you have, try to locate a book on houseplants..i have several books on house plants and that helps alot especially when you go to wal-mart and their pots are marked 4" pot..green foilage...lol..do they think everyone knows automatically what kind of plant it is..it just has general instructions and alot of times if you follow what the sticker says your plant will die..lol..i learned that the hard way

I was born and raised on a farm in Watertown. My grandmother never had a problem moving house plants out, but in season, and she never left them out anyway.

Reply:Yes - to kill them; want to bring them back inside at end of summer? - Keep them in the shade!!!!!
Reply:It depends on the plant. You can definitely put the plants outside, the fresh air is good for them. So is the rain. However, some of them might need to go in full or partial shade, while others would be perfectly fine in full sun.
Reply:Depends on what kind of plants. Alot of house plants can't take the full sun.
Reply:I won't repeat what has been said about it depending on the plant. However the poster above me said something about bugs. I have a solution for that. If you do put your plants outside, a couple of days before you bring them in put sliced potatoe on the top of them. The potatoe will attract the bugs and then toss the potatoe and the bugs are gone with the potatoe you toss.
Reply:I never put my house plants outside because I dont want them picking up any bugs when I bring them back inside. Exception might be when I am trying to nurse a sick plant back to health I will give sun for just a few hours. Your house plants should be very comfortable where you have them in your house. If not, try a new spot, preferably with morning sun.
Reply:It depends on the plant mostly. Many plants prefer 50/50 shade/sunlight. Usually in the house near a window is good. Ask an associate in the garden center at Wal-Mart, Home Depot. etc. if the plants you have can take full sunlight.
Reply:No, houseplants can't withstand the direct sun, if you are going to put them outside, make sure that you put them in the shade. Those black spot that they get after being outside is sunburn.
