What can i do for keep my cats from potting in my large tropical house plants?

I had the same problem. I did the fabric and aluminum foil thing, and that didn't work. The toothpicks either. She pulled them out.

It was then suggested Cayenne Pepper sprinkled on the soil or lemon peels. I did the pepper and after a week she forgot all about the plants. It's been months now and it's still a go. Good luck.

Get soft screening and put in inside the top of the dirt. Then you can still water it and the cat cant get in it
Reply:ha ha ha ha! That is so funny! They are just trying to fertilze it!

It probably wouldn't be funny if it happened to me so check out http://www.catsinternational.org

maybe a web search?
Reply:put the torpical plats outside or in another room where your cat wont find.
Reply:Well, you can buy a cat deterrent spray from a home improvement center. Or you can sprinkle a mixture of black pepper and cayenne pepper in your plants. (That's the two main, and perhaps only, ingredients.) You will need to repeat this every now and then - watering washes it into the soil over time. Another option is to get a small spray bottle and give the cat a warning shot when it gets near the plants. I would use both in combination.
Reply:sprinkle pepper in dirt and even on leaves they'll leave it alone
Reply:Cover the dirt with something like a cloth or piece of plastic.
Reply:orange or lemon peels work - cats dont like citrus
Reply:SPRAY BOTTLE ALWAYS WORKS. I HAVE ABOUT 4 AROUND THE HOUSE RIGHT NOW FOR MY 4 MONTH OLD KITTY. HE JUMPS UP ON THE COUNTERS AND DINING TABLES. I'M TRYING TO BREAK HIM OF THOSE HABITS.
Reply:moth balls. take them out before you water, then replace 'em. truly works.
Reply:You can try covering the tops with saran wrap for awhile.
Reply:Cats hate stuff sticking out of the soil. Pine cones or something like that will do the trick.
Reply:stick tooth picks all over in the soil with about 1/2 inch sticking up above the soil. they wont be able to use it if they keep getting poked
Reply:The spray bottle is a good idea, it gives em immediate negative reinforcement, but you have to catch em at it.

This looks weird but it works--we stick old soft balls and footballs in the planters then the cat can't stand on them. But visitors always think it looks crazy having old balls in your potted plants.
Reply:Like put a mouse trap there so when it goes there the mouse trap will snap on its foot and the next time it will be scared!
Reply:Cover the soil with rocks. Less painful than the toothpicks for kitty.
Reply:Through their stupid asses out side.
