Do you know why there are nats around my house plants? How do I get rid of them? Strange!?!?

They were given to me when my cousin passed away, they mean a lot to me. I don't understand why there are nats in and around the plants.

Sounds like you have FUNGUS GNATS in your home and you're providing a place where they can live and breed, such as in the soil around houseplants where they actively feed on algae caused by excessive soil moisture.

Try doing the following to eliminate them;

1) Apply a generous dose of Insecticidal Soap + water onto the soil of your houseplants to kill the larvae.

2) Start watering less- allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings.

3) Apply about 1/2 inch of sand on top of the soil of your houseplants- this should help eliminate the breeding grounds for the gnats.

Hope this solves your problem....GOOD LUCK!

Reply:Fungus gnats are common in house plants when they are pre-existing in the soil and the warm indoor conditions facilitate their life cycle at this time of year, and into the winter. I've used this for years, and it works: At the hardware store or a store that sells plant products, they sell these sticky strips that you place on a stick (included) and put into the soil. They are yellow, which is an attractant to them, and whiteflies, by the way. They flock to it, stick to it, and you toss the thing. Just keep one in the soil during the winter, and they will keep the gnats to a minimum. A form of this is used in greenhouses. Good luck.
Reply:They are in the soil and hatch from eggs. Get a herbicidal soap from the garden center and use it as directed on the plants
