Does anyone know if there are any house/garden plants that can filter pollution like car exhaust?

We live on a very busy road in France where diesel fuel is the norm. I would like to place some large plants on our balcony to help absorb sound and help clean the air. Can plants actually filter pollutants from the air, or do they just extract CO2?

Several do filter air, but not really on any great scale. Diffenbachia is the best one that I've read about, but several others, including philodendrons, pothos, and peace lilies will do it too.
Reply:I have always been told that the more green plants there are around you the more filtered you air is so look for leafy plants like philodendron.
Reply:All plants remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere by photosynthesis , also called carbon assimilation , which uses light energy to produce organic plant materials by combining carbon dioxide and water. The finish results from the plants is providing us with oxygen.





As far as your patio is concerned you didn't really give much information on how big it is. Also what side of the home or structure it is on. These are important facts when it comes to what type of plants you can use. If the patio faces the south you will get full sun all day. If you have the room get some nice container plants the are tall and have lots of leaves to build yourself a wall of plants. You can go onto many gardening supply sites and view the different types of plants to make up your mind and the gardening supply sites also have each plant listed with what amount of sunlite they may need to suvive. I wish I could help more but you didn't supply the information needed to tell you what type of plants to buy.
