Which is more important to you, the cats or the plants?? It is not worth the stress of attempting to keep the cats out of them. You can hang the plants on the ceiling, but I wouldn't bet on the cats NOT finding a way to get to them...

Don't blame the cats, it a "cat thing". The poor critters just can't help themselves. Just give in and buy them some of the grass you can grow(purchase at any pet store) and watch them tear it up.

Don't punish the cats, it is instinct.
Reply:Put in orange peel. They hate the smell of citrus. But it smells good in the house.
Reply:plastic rap on top
Reply:hot sauce. i buy it by the gallons. good for gophers and wild animals getting in you trash too.
Reply:get rid of the cat!! they will never stop unless you hang the plants from the ceiling a place they cant reach!!
Reply:There are several commercial products available that you can mix with the top layer of the dirt, so that the cats will get an unpleasant smell or the like when digging in it.

Also, make sure the litter box stays clean. Sometimes finicky cats will try to find another source of dirt or sand (i.e. potted plants) if the litter box is too dirt for their taste.
Reply:place tooth picks in dirt,
Reply:place 'GLAD PRESS N SEAL" AROUND THE BASE OF PLANT- ALSO HELPS PLANT TO GROW SINCE IT CREATES A MOISTURE BARRIER
