Is it normal to have gnats thriving in my Ivy house plant?

If so, is this good or bad? How can I get rid of these little black bugs that fly (look like gnats)? I don't know much about plants but there are quite a few flying around in my plant and it's kinda worrying me. I find them on me sometimes, other places in the house. Plant experts, please lend a hand!

It sounds like you have fungus flies. Make sure your remove all dead organic matter from the soil. They love rotting leaves and twigs. Next, put a thin layer of sand on top of the soil. The sand suffocates the flies and their larva. If that does not work, go to a nursery and buy the proper chemicals.
Reply:It sounds like black flies. A home and garden store should have a spray you can use to get rid of them. They will spread to your other plants.
Reply:No, it's not good! Make a spray bottle of water and a bit of dishwashing soap and spray it into the soil (they lay eggs there).

Don't over water! Swampy soil breeds these little nasties. The soapy water treatment will get rid of them in a few days.

Best of luck!
Reply:It sounds like you have either fruit flies or fungus gnats, both of which like house plants and soil. (Fungus gnats are smaller; a site that I read about fruit flies said you can tell the two apart because fruit flies have red eyes. Oh, yeah, we can tell that one at a glance, can't we?)

Here's a link that will tell you, in non-scientific terms, how to handle your pest:

Also, if you are going to spray, go to a garden center and spring for an insecticidal soap. Many dish detergents are too harsh for a plant and burn the leaves, and that especially goes for grease cutters like Dawn.
Reply:Can't answer cat question in its own spot as too many answers- but wanted to.

Make SURE that you don't let the cat out into the vehicle until you are certain it won't be freaking out-why? Because of your toddler!

You don't want the child to get scratched up if the cat is running around frantically.

Just a thought. Bring the cat- just get the kiddo out of the way when you go to let the cat out.
Reply:no it is not good
Reply:No its not... now you need to ...suck it
