Bought a house with lots of outdoor plants... cant tell what is weed and what is not?

Any suggestions on a website or something that can tell me what some of these plants are. Also I have lots of bushes. I don't know how to trim them for sure, or if they even need to be trimmed. The only ones I can identify for sure are lilacs.

If you have a digital camera and know how to post pictures, you can go to http://forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/name... to the name that plant forum. You can post your pictures and people will identify them for you. That would be the easiest way. Otherwise perhaps this sight can help http://en.allexperts.com/q/Identifying-U...

Good luck!!
Reply:Well, a weed is really nothing more than a plant you don't want. So only you can decide for yourself what is a weed and what's not. When I moved to my new home I took out everything until I was left with nothing but bare soil, and then I started my garden completely from scratch. But when it comes to my garden I'm a control freak. That may not be the approach for you.

As for identifying plants, your best bet would probably be to take specimens to a local nursery and have them tell you what it is.
Reply:Start by locating any plant that looks different from those around it and removing any plants near it to give it room, these are generally your perennials. Weeds and volunteer annuals are a little tougher and need a trained eye. You can usually find these eyes in the form of Master Gardeners. Contact your County Agent to locate your nearest volunteer.
