Is there an effective way to discourage cats from eating house plants, other than removing the plants!?

Bitter apple, althought some cats (like mine) seem to love the flavor (of course!). You can also try soaking spicy red peppers in water and spraying that water on your plant--when the cats chew the leaves they'll get some pepper heat and, hopefully, stop.

Hi Arleigh...consider trying a product called Grannick's Bitter Apple http://www.grannicks.com found worldwide at most pet stores. It's a pet-friendly citrus spray application to deter pets from chewing or licking items of desire.

Keep in mind, some houseplants are toxic to cats and will kill them.
Reply:They're are products made to spray on things to keep animals for chewing on them, but I don't know if it is ok to spray on plants. go to the pet store

[1]get a spray bottle, fill it with water, and when the cats eat the plants, spray them. after a while, they will be disciplined enough not to eat it.



[2] get a shallow planting tray, and plant grass in it. [no fertilizer!]

it is safe for the cats to eat, and they will use it instead of houseplants.
Reply:I bought some bitter spray at petco which you use to keep pets from chewing on items. I sprayed it on my plants and the cat has not chewed on them and the plants are still alive.
Reply:I'm told to keep an eye on the pets, and everytime they go near the plant, to either spray water or shake a can of loud coins etc.. after a few times they get it.
Reply:is your cat indoors only? if so your cat may just be trying to put greens in his/her diet. cats need to be able to have access to greens. you can buy cat grass to grow indoors (available at the pet store) there are now also dry foods that come with greens added to them. purina cat chow indoor formula is what my indoor cats eat. more info at www.catchow.com also i tried the change or pebbles in a soda can with one of my cats and it stopped the behavior but it also made him afraid of strange loud noises. this affected him for the rest of his life. just my experience.
Reply:Tobasco sauce. They'll figure out on their own that the plants aren't tasty anymore on their own.
