Does anyone know why dogs eats dirt from house plants?

my boxer puppy was like that when she was younger, no plant in the house was safe. i was worried about it my vet said she was just bored %26amp; the dirt in the plants may have a element that she likes the smell or taste. the vet recomended a small amount of household ammonia( cheap at dollar store) around the rim will detere the dog due to the smell.
