Where is the least expensive place to buy house plants in Denver , CO?

Paulinos gardens, home depot, target,

My house plants are dying..any tricks to keep them alive?how often to water?

There are so many factors that could be effecting your plant's health.

It could be that the soil doesn't contain the right nutrients for your plant, or that, if you've been giving it plant food, you accidentally gave it too much.

Watering is done in general every 3 days, give or take. If your plant is getting too much water, it will get sick, if your plant isn't getting enough water, it will also get sick, check online to see what your particular plant needs in terms of hydration.

One last thing. Check to see if your plant is a shade plant, or a light plant. If it is a shade plant, it should be kept out of direct sunlight, and it needs fewer hours of light per day. If it's a sunny plant, it should get lots and lots of sunlight, if you don't have access to enough sunlight for your plant, there are special bulbs specifically designed to simulate sunlight and they would provide your plant with the light it needs.

Most houseplants die from overwatering, perhaps every opther day, but sunlight is a key as well
Reply:only water them when they feel dry depending on the plant they need light I keep mine in my bathroom I've had mine for over ten years some I don't water unlees thet look welty

here's a pic of mine
Reply:Over watering is definitely a common problem. One to two times per week is enough.

Make sure the roots have enough room. Could the pots be too small?

Also, add some plant spikes, they may need a little nutrition. They are very inexpensive.
Reply:There could be Quite a number of factors, they could need larger pots, new soil, more nutrients, less watering or visa Vera's,more light or less light-don't know what plants they are.Insects maybe a factor ask you the q. try different things see how it goes.
Reply:My first guess is that you are using tap water.

Try not to use tap water on indoor plants, there is all sorts of chemicals and fluoride, bleach and crap in your tap water. Go to the grocery and buy a gallon or two of water, nothing special, pay under a buck for the water.

Second guess is in proper watering.

Totally depends on the plant as to how much water you give them, so look up on your computer how much and how often to water your plants.

Lastly feeding, indoor plants need food or meal in the soil, so when you are looking up how often to water them with you non treated water find out the appropriate potting soil mix.
Reply:depending on where u live the winter is very hard on plants in the northern states lack of light heatt on in the house some of the dying is natural only water when dry put your finger in about an inch down and if its dry water try to put in brighest window south or west good luck
Reply:I water mine 2-3 times a week. You don't want to over water them and drown them. But then you don't want to starve them. A safe way to check is to stick a toothpick into the soil. If it comes out sorta moist, you don't have to water them that day. If it comes out bone dry, definately feed them.
Reply:you can let them get dry and then water them with a measuring cup to see how much you put in and if they like sun or shade

What house plants help remove pollution from indoor air? Choose one?
Actually, all of the above, but research shows that the Spathiphylum plant commonly known as the Peace Lily serves the purpose the best.
Reply:Actually all plants do. Some are better than others. Sanseveria is a good one. See the web page below.
Reply:None of the above. But spider plants will filter the air. Go check them out at your local nursery or plant section in Wal-Mart, Home Depot or a similar store.

Reply:(A) and don't smoke helps.
Reply:Ferns because they have the most foliage, But all house plants help to remove pollution and put oxygen into the air.
Reply:plants need carbon dioxide so i will go with D because it grows faster and the combined surface area of the leaves.

  • Incents and house plants?

My friend and I are talking on the phone and we were wondering if the ashes from an incent would hurt a house plant. Does anyone know??

    Incents and house plants?
It might, depending on the plant. For example, pepper plants are very sensitive to nicotine and smokers shouldn't handle the foliage. But, most plants don't really mind. In fact, they will help clean up the air from the incense (suck up CO2 and give off oxygen).
    Reply:i doubt it very much.

In my experience, a person can cover the soil with pebbles, or large rocks or pine cones or any other stickery seed pods that are avilable in your area and/or sprinkle hot pepper flakes over any of these suggestions. Good Luck!

Reply:take him to the vet NOW!
Reply:Take him to a vet immediately and don't let him eat grass. Some dogs can't digest plants, epically small dogs. And if you use fertilizer or pesticides, even if you don't use them on your lawn and just your garden, they run off into your lawn and can be highly toxic. Make sure your dog is eating regularly and drinking lots of water.
Reply:I would ask a vet and not people on yahoo answers lol. I know that dogs eat grass after being sick but blood is serious sign so call the vet.

Does anyone know if there are any house/garden plants that can filter pollution like car exhaust?

We live on a very busy road in France where diesel fuel is the norm. I would like to place some large plants on our balcony to help absorb sound and help clean the air. Can plants actually filter pollutants from the air, or do they just extract CO2?

Does anyone know if there are any house/garden plants that can filter pollution like car exhaust?
Several do filter air, but not really on any great scale. Diffenbachia is the best one that I've read about, but several others, including philodendrons, pothos, and peace lilies will do it too.
Reply:I have always been told that the more green plants there are around you the more filtered you air is so look for leafy plants like philodendron.
Reply:All plants remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere by photosynthesis , also called carbon assimilation , which uses light energy to produce organic plant materials by combining carbon dioxide and water. The finish results from the plants is providing us with oxygen.

As far as your patio is concerned you didn't really give much information on how big it is. Also what side of the home or structure it is on. These are important facts when it comes to what type of plants you can use. If the patio faces the south you will get full sun all day. If you have the room get some nice container plants the are tall and have lots of leaves to build yourself a wall of plants. You can go onto many gardening supply sites and view the different types of plants to make up your mind and the gardening supply sites also have each plant listed with what amount of sunlite they may need to suvive. I wish I could help more but you didn't supply the information needed to tell you what type of plants to buy.

Good luck and turn on your fan.

My cats dig durt from house plants. Any advice how to protect my plants?
Which is more important to you, the cats or the plants?? It is not worth the stress of attempting to keep the cats out of them. You can hang the plants on the ceiling, but I wouldn't bet on the cats NOT finding a way to get to them...

Don't blame the cats, it a "cat thing". The poor critters just can't help themselves. Just give in and buy them some of the grass you can grow(purchase at any pet store) and watch them tear it up.

Don't punish the cats, it is instinct.
Reply:Put in orange peel. They hate the smell of citrus. But it smells good in the house.
    Reply:plastic rap on top
Reply:hot sauce. i buy it by the gallons. good for gophers and wild animals getting in you trash too.
Reply:get rid of the cat!! they will never stop unless you hang the plants from the ceiling a place they cant reach!!
Reply:There are several commercial products available that you can mix with the top layer of the dirt, so that the cats will get an unpleasant smell or the like when digging in it.

Also, make sure the litter box stays clean. Sometimes finicky cats will try to find another source of dirt or sand (i.e. potted plants) if the litter box is too dirt for their taste.

Ivy is an outdoor plant Basically. They don't do very good indoors. Some people can, some can't.

When I change the water in my fish tank would this water and waste be beneficial to house plants?

No. If you treated your water it will probably harm your plants. Plants need the chemicals that are in the water. To much fish waste is also to acidy but in SMALL amounts it is ok for plants. HOWEVER, If any fish die, plant the body in the soil,, that is GOOD fertilizer.

When I change the water in my fish tank would this water and waste be beneficial to house plants?
Very high in nitrates and amonia. Not a good idea.
Reply:No-nasty yucky-like dipping water from a school toilet on fish day that won't flush.
Reply:yes it would because the algae has vitamins.
Reply:might be, but it sure would stink to high heaven after awhile....good luck
    Reply:no

Reply:yes the water from your fish tank is very good for your plants,i always use it.
    Reply:yes
Reply:Perhaps, but it would smell. Better to let the benefit go to the outside plants!
Reply:Old aquarium water is fantastic for plants, especially if you have fish that create a lot of waste like goldfish. The only thing you have to watch for is to avoid watering house plants with fish water if you've added any of these to the tank: aquarium salt (or any), any medication, or any chemical, including pH adjusters or algae killers etc. The last two generally aren't safe for aquariums anyway. pH up is fine if you know exactly what you are doing, but pH down (acid) and algae ridding chemicals (pesticides) are generally more harmful than good, for both your fish and houseplants.
Reply:no no no ,it will kill them its because of urine from fish,
Reply:It can, but the bacteria could make your house smell. It's better if it's used for garden plants outside.
Reply:If you have fresh water fish the water is good for your plants.

If you have salt water fish, the water will kill your plants.

All my house plants have leaves with brown tips. Too much water or not enough or whatever?

    hmm thats weird

All my house plants have leaves with brown tips. Too much water or not enough or whatever?
It could be due to over-watering, but I normally find it's due to the air being too hot and dry, and / or too much bright sunlight. Try misting the leaves occasionally with a spray bottle and make sure they're not in continuous, intense, direct sunlight.
Reply:There is one houseplant called a spatheletum (sp) that if you water it with city water(containing chlorine of flouride) it will develop brown tips and edges. Try with rain water or with distilled water or water from a well.
Reply:plants get brown leaf tips from uneven watering: getting some water makes them grow, then they dry out for too long, and can't get enough water to sustain the amount of leaf they have. i'd say give them smaller amounts of water more frequently.
    Reply:my grandma always told me

    brown leaves = underwatering

    yellow leaves = over watering
Reply:Could be too much water, some plants actually prefer distilled water to tap water,

Make sure it gets at least once a month some sunlight, every couple give it a good feed %26amp; if in doubt talk to your local garden centre
Reply:Over-watering is the most harmful effect plants can face. It may cause brown, yellow, spots, mold, or smell. The best way to regulate this is ensure plants never sit directly in water by adding some clean pea gravel or similar material to your drain trays and sit the plant pots on them. This will allow better air transfer. Also, make your watering schedule as regulated as your coffee breaks by putting it in your day-minder. Maybe every 10 days or so for houseplants, unless they are in full sun, then water every couple of days...
Reply:There can be many explainations for browning tips. Too much light, hard water, etc. The questions I have are, how long have they been in their current pots? They may be potbound and need stepped up into the next size pot. Are you fertilizing regularly? Lack of nutrition can cause browning on some plants. Do your pots all of drainage (and I don't mean rocks at the bottom of the pot, I mean holes)? Lack of drainage will cause browning, normally a mushy browning though. Are any of your plants touching a window? That cause cause burning almost instantly. I doubt I need to ask if you run a/c or heat. A lot of plants like higher humidity, which they don't normally get when you run your air, and a lack of it can cause browning or wilting. Don't be too afraid of just trimming off the browned edges, it generally won't harm plants. Anyways, there's lots of variables. Feel free to contact me if you have anymore questions. Hope this helps!
Reply:Underwatering will cause your plants to wilt.Dropping leaves and buds are warning signals. Underwatering them will cause the plants to turn brown and also the soil will be dry. Contrary to one of your answers I saw, overwatering will turn yellow and leaves will drop causing roo rot. Most all plants are similar. Most plants need indirect light but getting back to your question, always feel of the soil. It can tell you a lot.
Reply:If just the tips are brown, that is a sign of too much water. I have a peace lilly that always gets brown tips if I water too much. I just take a scissor and gently cut the brown tips off. If concerned about how much to water, you can buy a water meter. You stick it in the dirt and it will tell you if the soil is too dry, moist, or too wet. That way you always get accurate watering.

Please tell me how much water and sunlight ivy house plants need? Thx?

I have found that they need to be moist but not sitting in water and more than just filtered light.

But not direct light as it can burn the leaves!

THE ARE MEALY BUGS, JUST MAKE A MIXTURE OF SOAPY WATER AND SPRAY THE LEAVES, IT WILL KILL THEM AND IS TOTALLY HARMLESS TO YOU AND YOUR SURR0UNDINGS

My house plants have white hairy little bugs on it. what is the name of it and how can I get rid of it?
They are Aphids. Treat them with "SEVIN" brand pesticide. Good Luck.
Reply:Probably aphids. Go to Home Depot and ask for aphid spray and presto they will be history!!
Reply:The best way to get little bugs out of your houseplants are to use cigarettes. I know it sounds weird but it works all the time. You unroll a cigarette, soak the insides in water and water you plants with it. It is safe on your plants and gets rid of the bugs.
Reply:Sound like aphids. You can get a spray at any greenhouse or plant department that will kill the bugs. The same spray will also kill spider mites.
Reply:As mentioned with a previous writer's, rather complete answer, these are mealy bugs. The insecticidal soap is often the most useful and simple treatment. It breaks down the waxy coating, but gives the added advantage of helping to clean the plants.

The fuzzy stage is virtually unique to the mealy bug pests and means you're dealing with adult stage. The adults tend to be completely stationary in most species. The additional advantage of the soap is it's ability to help eliminate the young, small, crawler stage that often goes unnoticed.

Regardless, the important thing is to break the life cycle at any of the development stages in order to achieve control.

Regards the cigarette solution, it's real. The nicotine in the tobacco is one of the more powerful natural insecticides. If you choose to use this method, be careful that the solution isn't too strong. Testing a part of the plant for sensitivity is wise, but be prepared to wait 3-5 days to be sure that you've observed any slowly developing damage. Also, be aware that nicotine, when concentrated, is a deadly poison to pets and humans, as well.

As a clarification, aphids do not have a fuzzy appearance. Whiteflies are very active and do readily take flight.

To repeat, "The fuzzy stage is virtually unique to the mealy bug pests."
    Reply:Sounds like Aphids.

Go to a garden center and buy a pesticide that will kill Aphids.

You would want to spray them outside... allow to dry then bring back inside
Reply:They are called Mealy bugs And are in the Scale family. It depends on what kind of plant you have as to what type of insecticide you use to get rid of them.Alcohol on a cotton swap will do if there's not an infestation.
Reply:yup, that is aphid for sure, make sure you had a clean swept. but if in your neighborhood there are still other three infected by this bug, they'll comeback.

try to trim branches to allow sun ray and reduce humidity. get rid of that infected leaves. or maybe total pruning would be help if you are avoid using insecticide
Reply:This is one of the most commonly misdiagnosed insects on houseplants. The white fuzzy blobs on your houseplant leaves are not a fungus – they are an insect.

Mealy bugs are white, soft-bodied insects that suck plant juices They are often found nestled in the nooks and crannies of your plants, where it's hard to spray. Most commonly they attack the new growth and therefore are usually found near the growing tips, and where leaves join stems or along leaf veins. The bug itself is covered with white, waxy threads that protect them from predators and give them the fuzzy appearance.

There are numerous generations per year. Hot dry conditions favour reproduction of mealy bugs. The damage caused by mealy bugs is usually yellow leaves that drop prematurely. There may also be a sticky substance on other leaves.

Control: Proper light, water, and fertilizer keep a plant more pest resistant. Try to be consistent in your care, and check bug-prone plants regularly. As these insects are under a protective hairy covering, direct contact with a pesticide is difficult.

In severe cases, prune and discard infected portions of the plant

Repeated applications of insecticidal soap can effectively control mealy bug populations. Spray the plant thoroughly every 5 to 7 days for 4 weeks. This is required to control the pest in all stages of growth.

For smaller infestations, dab the insects with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol. Repeat this procedure every week until the bugs are gone. Make sure to test the soap and alcohol mixtures on a small portion of the plant prior to full application because some plants may be sensitive to soap or alcohol

PS Its not Aphids, they come in green black and yellow colors. Here is a link for you.
Reply:They are aphids, and you can get a spray or a powder for lowes or home depot. Then they will be gone as fast as you found them.

    Have a great weekend!!!
Reply:Sounds like Aphids. Put some dish soap and water in a spray bottle and squirt the leaves. That should clear it up.
Reply:Could be mealy bugs. Don't know how to get rid of them. Sorry.
Reply:Little white flies. I find them more in the summer when it is warm, and my plants are really wet. Try to water them less, but more often. They do make sprays for them, but I have found the best to use are the ones meant for vegetables and garden plants:) Hope this helped %26amp; good luck! Tis the season
Reply:Do they have tiny little wings? If so, they are whiteflies, and pretty common. You can get treatments off the shelf at the home/garden store.

Should I spring for real or plastic plants in my house?

Are plastic plants out? Should I have immortal plants, or plants that sway with the sun in my house?

Should I spring for real or plastic plants in my house?
plastic. and make sure they have yellow or white flowers, that way, in case you are having a bbq and run out of cheese, the flowers can be used as a substitute.
Reply:That depends on how caring you are. Plastic plants look ok, don't go bad. They might have optical bebefits. But real plants have a life. They change, grow, bloom, smell, need to be taken care of. You can enjoy feeding them. They can even detox your room (for example spider plants do that.)

Why do all house plants I have die?

House plants need only three thing to grow.....sunlight, water and good soil, period.

You can always try the artificial ones if your thumb isn't green enough to remember to water them weekly.

Why do all house plants I have die?
Maybe you water them too much and then the roots rot. If you are watering them too little, then the plants would be drooping very sadly.
Reply:probably neglect. Most plants require certain conditions, if you over or underwater ( the usual reason for a black thumb) they die. some people put plants that need shade in the window and plants that need sun in a dim room, this will stunt or kill them. The best thing you can do is find a particularly hardy plant if you have a black thumb. I suggest cacti, you can forget to water them for months and get away with it.

  • How can I stop my cat from digging into our house plants?

The best thing I've found is to go to your local hardware store (Ace, Home Depot, etc.) and buy some window screen. You can cover the soil but it keeps the cats out while still allowing you to water. It can be done one of two ways...

1 - Just lay the screen directly on top of the soil. It will keep your kitty from having direct contact with the soil, but mine figured out that they could pull the screen up and still dig in the dirt.

2 - Cover the soil with the screen so that it's level with the top of the pot, then attach the screen to the pot. You'll have to cut an opening to allow the plant to pass through but this way it keeps the screen and, more importantly, the cats out of direct contact with the soil. Depending on what type of pot your plant is in you may have to get creative to attach the screen to it. The pots that I have that have are plastic and have lip on the outside that I folded the screen under and stapled.

If you have a ceramic or terra cotta pot then you may have to go with the first option I suggested, unless you can find a way to get the screen attached.

    Good luck!

How can I stop my cat from digging into our house plants?
Put moth balls on the top of the dirt, they hate the smell and will stay away from them. You can remove them after the cat learns that the plants smell bad.
Reply:I found that putting marbles or stones the size of marbles or larger, on top of the dirt in the plant pots stopped the cats from trying to dig in the plants. You can still water the plants but the cat won't want to dig in the marbles or stones.
Reply:PetSmart, Pet Barn and Wal-Mart sell cat repellant in spray form that you can spray on all kinds of areas you don't want your cat to go to. It is harmless to pets, humans, plants and furniture (and odorless).

Reply:i heard of this stuff called bitter Apple spray that doesnt hurt or damage anything but it lets off a smell only animals can smell and is supposed to keep them away from stuff u spay it on so myb that will help
Reply:When she is doing it grab her and put her up to the plant and slap her butt. I do not mean hard just enough to get the message through and while you are smacking her butt say stuff like " no, bad girl, bad, bad, bad" then let her down and just keep doing that, and make sure that you are saying it firmly and in no way being nice abou it. And anytime that you see her head for it or getting ready to put her paw in it say loudly and firmly 'no'. This what i had to do with my cats (and i have had a LOT of cat in my life) and it works.

p.s. if that does not work get a water sprayer, like a squirk bottle and spray her with it when she is in it or even around it.
    Reply:mothballs will help

Reply:Those are fungus gnats that feed on, yes, fungus in the potting soil. When the soil stays damp, you’ll get fungus, and with fungus you’ll get these little pests. I’ve heard that they will be attracted to these sticky yellow pest strips, but also consider pheromone traps and pyrethrin sprays.

How do i get rid of gnats in my house plants?

set out a dish of water with some honey, or vinegar in it, they will be attracted to it, and drown in the water.

How do i get rid of gnats in my house plants?
Usually a mist of soapsuds does it, but make sure your plant varieties can handle that.
Reply:Ngats live in potted plants and on aging fruit. Move the plants outside in the shade and don't water for a week. Most plants will tolerate a dry spell. Older plants should be repotted with new soil. The gnats are attracted to pots with rotting roots. When you repot cut the old roots out.

Let green fruit on the table but move mature fruit into the refrigerator, esp bananas.

    Put screens on the windows.

How can i get rid of flying gnats on the soil of my house plants?

    Sevin dust will work.

You can get it at Walmart. I just take a plastic spoon %26amp; scatter some on the soil. Do it after you have watered because when you water the dust will be washed into the soil.

  • Can Venus Fly Traps be house plants?

Yes, if you build a terrarium to keep them in and I will provide you with the information you will need to do this as well as everything else you will need. If you are going to grow carnivorous plants then you need to do it right from the start. You can keep them outside in full sun or in a terrarium, but I recommend that you not keep them in thier origional container because their roots need room to grow and there is not enough air. Also, if you are going to keep them in a terrarium then make sure you do not put the terrarium in direct sunlight. What a lot of people do not know is that carnivorous plants do best outside in the open air and in full sun. They are cold tolerant down to 20 degrees and actually need to be winterized and go into hibernation in order to do well next season. If your temps drop below 20 then you can keep them in an unheated garage or garden shed. If you keep them in a terrarium then you can force them into hibernation or dormancy and I will give you the site that explains how to do this. As for watering, carnivorous plants are bog plants and their soil needs to stay moist all the times. If you grow them in a terrarium this should not be a problem. As for feeding them, check out the expertvillage video I've included and it will answer all your questions.

    carnivorous plant NoNos:

No meat of any kind. Meat rots and it will kill them

No fertilizer of any kind. Pot carnivorous plants in a 50/50 mix of peat moss and perlite only.

No straight tap water. Use filtered tap, aged tap or distilled (preferred)

Yes they make good house plants. If you don't have flies, small bits of hamburger will work as well.

Reply:Yes, I used to have a baby one. But make sure you water it, and try to make sure you actually HAVE flies.
Reply:Yeah! They sell them at Wal-Mart and I bought one. Sometimes bugs would get eaten! They are cool.
Reply:All the time, they'll sell them at home centers. They are very interesting. They are plants and need to be watered and cared for, but it isn't necessary to give it insects, you don't have to worry about that, as long as you care for it as a plant, not a pet that has to eat something, it will be fine.

My house plants have a white power on there leaves?

all of a sudden, don,t know what or why ...it is any help

My house plants have a white power on there leaves?
The powder on the leaves is probably a fungus called powdery mildew. You can pinch off the infected leaves and hope no others get the mildew. Or you can use a fungicide that is listed specifically for powdery mildew and says that it is safe to use on AV's. You have to read the fine print on the label to determine this.
Reply:set your plant in the kitchen sink and gently wash the leaves with a mild dish detergent and running water

Is coffee suppose to be good for house plants?

Best advice is to compost your coffee grounds with other household and yard waste. By themselves, they won't do much for your houseplants and in some cases can be harmful. In the end, it is best to follow the advice of reputable horticulturalists as it pertains to the species of plants you are trying to grow. Here are links to a couple of my favorite plant care websites:

    Good luck with your gardening.

Is coffee suppose to be good for house plants?
not really, but it can help acidify the potting soil. a lot of the water used for drinking is pH 7.0 or higher. Plants like 5.4-6.4 and the water makes the soil buffer higher in pH. coffee can help bring the pH down.

It's not good horticultural practice, but it can work.

  • What house plants provide more oxygen?

Algae in the oceans produce 90% of the atmospheric oxygen. That means 9 out of 10 breaths you take the oxygen is from the ocean. One out of 10 is from all of the land plants on earth. So the oceans are pretty important to the survival of all organisms that need oxygen to live. If you don't consider algae a plant (because it photosynthesizes some people have classified it as a plant, others do not) the land plants that make the most oxygen are plants in the tropical rain forests because they photosynthesize year round.

So for a houseplant you would want something that is tropical or semi-tropical--the more leaf area the better and the more sun they can take the better. Something like a peace lily would produce a lot.

What house plants provide more oxygen?
All plants emit oxygen through a process called photosynthesis.

So, the more plants and the larger plants will give off more oxygen than having one or two small plants.
Reply:I was told a long time ago , at a nursery that spider plants have the highest rate of giving off oxygen and filtering gasses from the air, but at night they also give off a huge amount of Carbon dioxide.

Any soil can transmit any pest. Spread your new soil on a baking sheet ant roast it at 300 for an hour. Or you can microwave it at 75% power for 2 minutes. That should kill off living pathogens.

What kind of house plants can I get that are inexpensive?

Just go to a place like Lowe's that has an end of season sale and buy whatever is really cheap. In fact they sometimes have ones that are so dried out they are planning to just throw them out - maybe if you asked you could get some of those for free and try reviving them with a lot of watering. You can't get cheaper than that.

2 questions about my house plants?

So I take the bottle of water i use for my hair and mist the leaves of my plants every day or so. Also would like to know i have a baby plant would it be ok to put an aqua globe in it?

2 questions about my house plants?
It depends on the plant and your conditions in your house. Some tropical and semitropical plants like a lot of humidity. If the humidity is high enough naturally they adding water with a mist is not necessary. However, in many homes with gas heat, for example, the humidity is very low--sometimes less than 20%. It can get dryer than a desert. In this case it is a good idea to mist to keep the leaves from dehydrating.

My house plants have small flies (gnats), what is an organic method to eliminate them?

If they are black they are either shore flies or fungus gnats which occur when a person waters their plants too often. The larvae live in the soil and they need water. Let the pot dry completely out before watering. Don't worry, the plants can go without water better than the larvae can. Do this 3 or 4 times and the larvae should all be dead. Then practice watering less often than you did originally.

For the adults, go to a good L%26amp;G Center and they should have yellow sticky traps. Put a few of these around the plants where they are and they will fly to the yellow and glue themselves to the trap. When the problem seems under control you can dispose of the traps. The yellow traps also work for other flying pests like aphids, whiteflies and thrips.

How do I stop my cat from biting all of the house plants??

Plant kitty-grass in few little pots and spread them around the house for easy access. So, once your cat gets used to the fact that there's juicy and tasty grass for her, she won't try to eat your plants. Right now she's probably doing it because she has to "help" herself throw out some hairballs, and since she sees green... well, the nature does its thing!

Reply:Buy urself a spray gun or water pistol. When u see the cat heading towards the plant(s) give he or she a single squirt. NOTE: You cant let ur cat see that its u controlling the squirt gun tho. U need to have them think that if they r going to go near this plant or any plants in the house that IT will squirt them. This works most of the time when the cat doesnt see that its u. So when u do go to squirt them make urself hidden. Try not to let the cat see that it was u doing this. If u cant hide urself make it obvious that u were doing sumthing else. Cats r smart animals and will look at us when sumthing like that happens. Not so often to blame us at the time, but more so to look at u as if saying "oh my god did u see that?" If they see that its u doing it to them, they will bring a tolerance to it. So u wanna make sure they dont know its u. This worked for me when my cat used to claw at the curtains. Its funny to watch them jump in reaction but dont let them know its u. This does work because my cat stopped the clawing. So urs should stop the biting. Goodluck

How many house plants are needed to improve oxygen levels, in order to see results?

I think when plant absorb water, or H2O, they use the H, or the hydrogen, and aspirate (or "exhale" in animal terms) the oxygen they take in as a liquid as a gas. The aspiration I believe is very slow and could take 100 plants 100 years, longer than the average lifespan of a human being, to see significant increases in oxygen levels.

How many house plants are needed to improve oxygen levels, in order to see results?
Kurdiatcha gave a much better answer. Plants respire (using oxygen) around the clock, but only photosynthesize (releasing oxygen) under lighted conditions. If you have a lot of algae in your aquarium, and don't keep it lighted, your fish may die of oxygen deprivation at night. Report Abuse
Reply:There are too many variables to enable the question to be answered.

Contrary to popular belief plants dont; just produce poxygen. All plants are aerobic organisms, just like animals. That means they use oxygen to enable them to burn their food.

Plants can produce oxygen, but only when they are actively growing and only if they are in strong enough light.

If a plant is not under strong enough light or if it is unable to grow it will burn its energy reserves and use oxygen in the process.

The amount of light a plant needs to manage to produce oxygen varies with the species. Some species of indoor plant can produce oxygen under an 80watt or higher light globe. Most species can not and need to be taken outside regularly to 'recharge' as it were, to be able to build up energy reserves which are slowly depleted when they are taken back inside.

And of course in darker situations ALL plants consume oxygen. So overnight ALL plants will be reducing the oxygen content of the room.

As you can see you need to define species, age, time period and illumination levels to enable even a rough estimate.

Under 'normal' circumstances the more plants in a room the lower the oxygen levels will be.

How do I keep my cat out of my house plants?

get a spray bottle, fill it with water and give him a little spritz every time you catch it, it works and he,ll stop

How do I keep my cat out of my house plants?
There is a spray you can buy at any pet store or even your local walmart store, it is called Stay Off. It works good. I have both cats and dogs and none of them like the smell or taste of this stuff. It is very inexpensive. you can also try using a squirt bottle of water and see if that works, but also try Stay Off, use it Daily and or whenever you are out of the house. Or you could try putting your plants up high enough so your cat cannot get into them.
Reply:There is no hope, you don't get house plants.
Reply:Keep them as far out of her reach as possible, and try sprinkling some ground cinnamon (a natural cat deterrant) around the base of the plants. Be sure to look up the types of foliage you have as some are toxic to pets.
Reply:I had this problem. Tap the cat on the nose every time you catch him/her in them.

Cat's hate being tapped on the nose. Don't do it roughly, but have a little force behind it.
Reply:What I did, I use a clear plastic bowl. I cut a hole in it and let plant grow through the hole. It was like dome. My plant was more like a tree, and the cats were playing in the soil, but if your cat is chewing on the plant this might not work. Good luck. Poncco
Reply:If you cover the soil with small pebbles or stones, your cat won't be able to dig into it.
Reply:Are they digging up the soil?

    or

Are they eating on the plants?

If they are digging in the soil I found that putting rocks as a mulch on the top of the soil stops them from digging.

If they are playing with or eating the plants then you need to put the plants up where the cats can't get to them. I fill up the whole windowsill with plants that way they can't jump up there.
Reply:If they are digging up the soil, I heard that putting aluminum foil around the plant on the dirt helps.
Reply:Use a spray bottle filled up with cold water since cats dislike water except to drink it.
Reply:this sounds funny but when they are near furniture or bothering anything, you squirt them with a squirt bottle everytime they bother something. they will eventually leave it alone RATE ME

  • House plants cattle won't eat?

Can anyone tell me what sort of plants I can plant on a house block in Central Queensland that cattle will not eat? I mean, shrubs, bushes, flower bed plants or anything really. We are having trouble with roaming cattle. We are in the process of putting up fences, but it is a slow process. They need to drought and frost hardy.

    Thanks in advance.

    Julie :o)

    House plants cattle won't eat?
Cacti plenty of cacti cause they come in all sorts or shapes have various types of flowers and are extremely low maintenance , plus they might give the cattle a run for their money! Failing that wait until your fence is done.
Reply:Its my experience that cattle will eat pretty much anything from apples tomatoes to pulled up cauliflower plants and small berch trees. now are the cows yours or a neighbours^

If your house plants could talk to you, what would they say?

Ya know, I've been in this pot for 8 years, I need a bigger one, not so much water, I'm getting root rot. And dang, do you know how hot that sun is? I'm a shade plant, thank you! Please remember, fertilizer every two months, but not in the winter, I need to rest. And by the way, I need a bit of a breeze now and then so I can have strong healthy stems that are flexible so I won't break when a real stiff one comes along. And could you please keep the grandkids away from me, they are picking me to death . . . . . . . . . . . .

If your house plants could talk to you, what would they say?
If they are droopy, they would be asking to be moved to a cooler place or asking for a drink of water if they are bright and bubbly they are happy play some music to them and make them feel wanted.John akathecompostman

What they would say is something that no one would want them to say for the secrets they know as we are truly ourselves we no one else is around.

House plants in apartment . Has my Green Thumb turned black w/age?

I have a pretty good sized apt. and love plants, used to have tons of them for years. Now I am having lots of failures. The only exposures available to me are North %26amp; West. I know that's part of my problem, easy plants like philodendrens, etc. do fairly well in North exposure, but I have two kitties who do a job on them, as they come and go in the front windows. I have 13 foot ceilings, can't think of an attractive way to use a full-spectrum light. West exposure is kitchen and bedroom with another tall apartment building next door, two large windows in kitchen, one in bedroom, but another tall apt. building right next door. Can anyone advise on plants like strawberry begonias and Wax plants (Hoyas) and the like? I believe hanging plants would be best, but have plaster walls and although I'm pretty good with a drill, I'm also short and can't see climbing that high. Thanks to any houseplant lovers!!

House plants in apartment . Has my Green Thumb turned black w/age?
try using a lamp or overhead lights. its a good way to get filtered light. this way you can put them any where you want.didn't get just what you were asking but I hope I've helped.
Reply:I have the best luck with succulents. They don't require too much of anything. I water them once a week and if I don't, they're still okay.
Reply:I like the succulents idea. "Japanese Jade" plants do well just about anywhere (not really "Japanese", buy the way - they're from South Africa).

But, I wonder if perhaps your plants are getting a fungus of some kind, either airborn or from white flies or aphids. Have you checked for that? Soil fungus can live in pots so changing potting soil alone may not solve a fungus or mold problem. Take a sample of soil or a wilted plant to your county agriculture office. They can usually tell right away and advise you.

Why do philodemdrons make good house plants?

The climbing varieties of Philodendron are easy to care for. They will thrive in lower light situations and tolerate some neglect. They do need warm air (nothing below 55 degrees F or so) and appreciate being misted regularly. Philos don't have too many pest problems aside from spider mites (if not given enough humidity) and occasionally, scale. Dry air will also cause the leaf tips to turn brown and crispy. While unsightly, it won't hurt the plant.

About house plants: would be ok to leave them outside for 5wks during summer while travelling?

...Or should I find someone to look after them? I'm thinking of my Christmas Cactus and a small crassula.

About house plants: would be ok to leave them outside for 5wks during summer while travelling?
my mother always left her house plants outside in the summer . wow did they grow and looked very healthy
Reply:Crassula and Christmas Cactus are actually plants that enjoy heat and summer temperatures out of doors. They grow wild in Italy!

They require relatively little watering and the odd shower will be quite sufficient to keep them healthy. I would not leave them in the bath as they might rot, whilst they will thrive out of doors. Mine are out all summer. The only thing they hate is frost.
Reply:My house plants spend the whole summer outside it really perks them up .

The only thing that would worry me is if it doesn't rain at all they could die ( but then if your in the UK i can guarantee it will rain ) other wise cant you get a neighbour to water them over the wall
Reply:It would be much safer to take them with you.
Reply:id leave them in the bath wheres theres some light from the window- wet a towel so its soaking and the plant will drink when it needs to
Reply:High! oosoart here, both your plants are classed as succulents, meaning that have fleshy leaves and store a lot of water for dry times, part of the cactus family.

Leave them in a lightly shaded spot, not full sun and if you can sit them on a tray of some kind with an old towel folded on the base to sit your pots on next to the tray put a bucket of water and the get some old sheeting or towelling long enough to reach from the bottom of the bucket and over the side down into the tray, the water should then soak up sheeting and down onto the towel in bottom of the tray just giving enough ,not too much to your plants.

Make sure the towel in the tray is wet to start with and the sheeting is wetted and twisted, should be fine.

Hope you understand all of this. Good luck, oosoart.
Reply:It would depend on the plant, and your weather in the summer for 5 wks. Some houseplants could not take the sun for that long, You would also be hoping that mother nature watered your plants, could your plants handle it if there was no rain for the entire 5 wks you were gone?or how about 5 wks of to much rain? the other problem that presents itself is that you will be gone for 5wks. If you have a plant sitter come into your house or apt to check on your plants they can bring in your mail pick up your newspapers, etc. Make the place look less deserted, and maybe less attractive to a burglar
Reply:If you get wild rabbits in your garden, it will take them 5 minutes, never mind 5 weeks to demolish your plants!
Reply:Some people recommend leaving house plants outside in the summer as it does them good. I am going to try it this year.

  • Can you grow Sweet Peas or Nicotiana as house plants?

I am without a garden right now, but I would love to grow some favourites indoors anyway.

    Thank you.

Can you grow Sweet Peas or Nicotiana as house plants?
Sweetpeas need deep soil with plenty of well roted manure to flourish so the answer to that is no. Nicotiana on the other hand should do well indoors as long as you give them a feed once a fortnight and make sure they get plenty of water.
    Reply:I should'nt think so.
Reply:You could try the sweet peas near the window and let them have as much light as possible and go for the smaller variety as you do not want 6ft flowers indoors, and the nicotiana should be no problem. Any chance of a window box until you have a garden.
Reply:What you need to do is to plant these in a trough instead of pots, that way the plants have more room to put their roots into.

Because these garden plants need light all around you need to imitate the light outside, you need a big cardboard box and have it so that you have 3 sides and the top is open, cover two opposite sides and the back with kitchen foil, stand the trough up so that it is on the side that has no foil on it, the three sides that have the foil on them should be facing the window so that when the natural light hits the kitchen foil the plants have an all round natural light supply
Reply:i thnk sweet peas wud start to take up 2 much room

The Vinegar idea will work well, in fact I spray some of my plants with water that has a few drops of dish detergent and a 1/4 cup of white vinegar added.

Spray about every other week or so, especially under the leaves, and the mites won't be back.

get some lady bugs and put them on your plants. They will eat the other bugs.

What's a good way to kill those little bugs that fly on %26amp; around my house plants?
Empty your pencil sharpener and put the shavings around the base of the plant. Now that you have the bugs, use a trap. They are bright in color and will attract the bugs that stick to it. Sounds gross but wait until you see how many you trap. Go to www.Dreamflipper.com for a good source.
Reply:They are like fruit flies, take a small glass or jar and put a little cider vinegar in it and a couple of drops of liquid dish washing soap and set it by your plants, wait a few days and look thru the bottom of the jar, you won't believe how many are in there, change the mixture as needed, I set several of these out every year....it does work!
Reply:You can go out and buy bug spray, you got just go a bottle of chemicals and spray it at them, or you can get nets around your plants!!!
Reply:If fruit flies are what those pests are, then set around several small bowls of vinegar-it attracts them and they get stuck in it. Leave the bowls for about two days; you shouldn't need anymore than that.

Its real easy to grow you just add water and light and my cat loves it, as long as I leave some out by his food bowl he doesn't go after the house plants. Plus its good for their digestive system to eat they grass, I think its just instinct that causes them to eat house plants if no grass is around.

I don't know about the water thing, but if you put crushed egg shells around your outdoor plants (like a ring around them) it will keep the slugs off of them. Idea being they don't like oozing over the sharp edges on the shells

I also have houseplants (mostly succulents), and I've had gnats from time to time. Every time I begin to get gnats I start watering my plants with a solution of 1/2 tablespoon to 3/4 tablespoon apple cider vinegar mixed into 4 cups of water this will help get rid of the gnats. It helps kill the larvae and eggs they have in the dirt. Also let your plants go as long without water as possible between waterings.

By the way, watering all of the time with that solution doesn't hurt anything, and it keeps fungi from growing (mushrooms, etc.).

    Stop chewing on them

What can you use to keep cats away from house plants?
There are lots of good sprays that will cause cats not to want to chew on them. You can look at them here:

    http://www.fleascontrol.com/cats-chew-on...

One of the best is actually one called Bitter Apple, that has been around for a long time. Cats hate the taste, so they will get away from plants if you spray it on them.
Reply:The spray bottle will work for some. It didn't mine and since I love my cats more than the plants, it was the plants that went to a new home.
Reply:Everytime you see them go near it, spray them with a water bottle.
Reply:If they are real plants use the atomizer method. Just spray your cats with water when they go somewhere you don't want them. Or dance around and shout like a monkey every time. Be consistent with whatever you do, just don't reward them. Even clapping your hands can be punishment to a cat as long as you are invasive about their behavior and you use a consistent punishment.

If you have fake plants I highly recomend bitter-spray. The stuff is awful and they will learn where it comes from. Just spray your plants with it and when the cat goes to clean himself after rubbing the plant he will get a wretched taste in his/her mouth. Try some yourself if you are worried, it's non-toxic but awful. This is an especially quick remedy if your cats chew on the plants. Don't use it on real plants though, as certain plants will absorb the chemical instead of water.
    Reply:maybe a spray
Reply:well listen my cats do the same thing and im worried the plants are poisiounsous so put tin foil around the bottom of the plant. they hate it my cats also used to pee in the bottom of it still us TIN!!! IT REALLY WORKS "PROMISE"!!!!!

My Dad used bleach diluted with water to kill a bacteria that was growing on some bushes he had outside and it worked. It killed the bacteria thereby stopping its deadly progress. The Bush's are flourishing today.

How do I stop my rabbit eating the house plants?

    The key to preventing bunny

    destruction is to make sure

your bunny has plenty of toys and

    entertainment. The more they have

to do, the less destructive they

will be. but the best thing to do

is to keep the plants out of reach from the bunny

    since the vast

    majority of them are poisonous

to bunnies if eaten. And be

careful if you hang your plants

from the ceiling. If the leaves

fall, you'll need to make sure

    they are well out-of-reach

    of the bunny.

Keep ur rabbit in a hutch away from plants and give him nutrisious vegies and fruit instead
Reply:Not much you can do sadly, they're sneaky little buggers. You'll just have to keep them out of the bunny's reach I'm afraid.
Reply:What if you give the rabbit more greens to eat, like parsley and kale and stuff? Maybe then he wouldn't bother eating the house plants. We don't usually keep plants on the floor so my bunny can't eat them :p
Reply:Use taste/smell aversion. You can buy a special spray at pet stores for cats and rabbits. You just spray it on and they will hate the smell, its totally humane and non-toxic.
Reply:Yes i agree, put them on top of something.
Reply:Place aluminum foil on the floor around the plant the rabbit will go to eat the plant leaves, step on the foil and not like the sound of that so he'll avoid the area. Just be sure the rabbit doesn't take an interest in the foil and try eating it. Another option if you catch the rabbit eating spray water on him using a spray bottle you need to do it as he is eating the leaves or as he is starting to eat them and as you spray him say, "no", in a loud firm voice. Good luck with your rabbit! Sara
Reply:You'll have to put them out of your bunny's reach, as a matter of urgency ... many house plants are deadly poisonous to rabbits, and can kill them.
    Reply:Eat the Rabbit!

    lol just Kidding,

well. fence it and when you let it out, keep and eye on them.
Reply:There are several thigs you could do

    1) Don't let him in the house

    2) Move the plants

3)Turn the rabbit into Sunday's lunch!

4)Give the rabbit away to someone else.

    Have a good lunch
Reply:Put them on stands off of the floor, so bunny can't reach.

Paint them with some cayenne pepper and water... bunny won't like the taste.

    Good Luck
Reply:Put them out of its reach!!
Reply:keep them plants out of reach. Many houseplants are toxic. make sure you know that the ones that are in his reach that he can/has chewed on are non-toxic!

What is the best way to clean the leaves on my large house plants?

Use a sponge, mild soap and water and your hands. First rub the leaves with the sponge to remove the dust and then use soapy sponge for the final shine.

I know it is labor intensive but it is a lab our of love and it is economical.

What is the best way to clean the leaves on my large house plants?
Dust the plants leaves gentally with a soft duster, to remove the dust. To shine the leaves, take a soft cloth and add a little Canola Oil (yes the kind used for cooking) and rub the leaves gentally. That will make them shiney and keep them healthy too year round! ~Good Luck~
    Reply:dust them
Reply:I usually wait until the weather warms and put them out in the rain for a couple of days. Not only does this clean the leaves naturally, but gives the plants some of the nutrients from rainwater that they don't necessarily get from tap water.
Reply:If it is not too large to handle, put it in the shower. Let the shower run on tepid until the leaves are clean and leave the plant there until enough moisture has evaporated on the leaves and it is light enough to move. Return it to its original location within 24 hours.
Reply:I have always used baby oil or mineral oil. Very light on a rag and wiped them on both sides. Good luck.
Reply:A wet towel or even a paper towel
Reply:Get a good sized new spray bottle and mist the leaves with plain water. (make sure the water isn't chlorinated)
Reply:My grandma used mayonnaise on a soft cloth. You just rub it all over the leaves, sparingly, and wipe off the excess. It takes the dust off and makes the leaves supple and shiny.
Reply:if they are not too big to handle, put them in the shower or take them outside (weather permitting) an gently spray them down with a hose with not too much pressure. my smaller ones I put in the sink and spray with the sink sprayer. Works great

How do I keep knats out of inside house plants?

When I get a cloud of gnats, usually in February, I usually use a yellow "sticky trap". These are bright yellow pieces of plastic that have been coated with glue. I get them at a local garden center in with their houseplant supplies. There are a couple seed catalogs that carry them too, I think Parks does. You can even make them: paint a piece of cardboard bright yellow and spread on some Tanglefoot or other very sticky glue that will NOT dry. Then I lay the trap down on a pot because the gnats do not fly very well and will just hop aboard and get stuck. I use the traps for whiteflies too, which are worse than the gnats because when you've got one, you've got about a thousand or so...for them, I stand the trap up, or tie it in plant branches so they can fly right to their doom. I leave the traps for a few days, then move them around so the bugs don't get used to them in one spot. It isn't an instant kill, but it works for me. Why does it work? The bugs like the color yellow and they will travel to the bright color to check it out.

How do I keep knats out of inside house plants?
put a little vinegar in a milk cap close too it.

IT will attract the Nat's too it..
Reply:they are not knats they are fruit flies who are atracted to sweet smelling plants especially during the colder monthes. go to a gardening store and there is spray to use that will eliminate them.
Reply:burn a incense in the plant the smoke and smell will run them off ..

  • I have house plants. I heard that coke and sprite is good for the house plants.?

I do know from an experiment that Sprite or Sierra Mist will preserve cut flowers better than plain water if plant food is not available.

While it is true that Coke is saving crops in India as mentioned on the web, it has nothing to do with using Coke in place of water. The reports are that Coke is being sprayed on the plants to control pests with amazing success. Whatever is causing Coke to be a good pesticide would also cause it to be a very poor choice for watering your plants. Stick with water!

Good to do... what? Kill them? All that will do will cause a build up of salt... or whatever junk is in soda. If you are trying to fertilize them you can buy spikes you put into the dirt, solution you mix into water, or pellets you sprinkle in the pot with it.
